Summary:

At the request of the Korea Language Promotion Foundation, Williamson County, Texas, will officially proclaim October 9 as “Hangul Day.” On October 6, Foundation Vice Chair Okbin Kil spoke during public comment at the county’s Commissioners Court, explaining the purpose of the proclamation and submitting the related documents. The county plans to make the proclamation official at its regular Commissioners Court meeting on October 13 at 9:30 a.m. This year marks the 580th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum and the 100th anniversary of Hangul Day. The draft proclamation cites the county’s rapidly growing economic, educational, and cultural ties with Korea, including Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor facility in Taylor and the Korean suppliers that have followed it to the area.

Meanwhile, with support from the foundation, Taylor High School in Texas launched “Korean 1,” its first for-credit Korean-language course, beginning in the 2026–27 school year, with about 30 non-Korean students enrolled. Foundation Chair Eunice Lee, Chair Emeritus Monica Ryu, and Secretary General Mijin Baek are also expected to attend a Hangul Day ceremony at Los Angeles City Council on October 9 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hangul Day. The Los Angeles City Council and the California State Legislature proclaimed October 9 as Hangul Day in 2023 and 2019, respectively.
